2010 Cleanup of Westwood Land Trust Properties

Celebrate Earth Week and Join the Westwood Land Trust for a Cleanup of Preserved Properties

As part of the annual Westwood Town Cleanup, the Westwood Land Trust (WLT) will be collecting litter on two of the preserved properties protected by the Land Trust. Volunteers are requested to help with the effort on the afternoon of Sunday, May 2. After the cleanup, light refreshments will be provided, and volunteers are welcome to hike throughout the properties. What a perfect way to spend a few hours on a spring afternoon and contribute to the Earth Week celebration.

The cleanup effort will begin at noon at 795 Clapboardtree Street – originally part of the former Polaroid Complex off of Route 1A. Duncan and Ellen McFarland purchased this 23-acre property that is adjacent to Prout Farm/Clapboardtree Meadows to expand the conservation land in that area. In 2006, the McFarlands generously offered to donate the property to the Town, and the Town voted to accept the donation. For access to this land, take Rte 1A south from Clapboardtree Street and take the second right at One Upland Road into the Upland Woods Industrial Park. Continue straight on the service road, passing the Universal Technical Institute (UTI) on your left. At the end, park along the sides of the service road; the preserved property will be in front of you.

At 2 pm, the cleanup will continue on the Perry property at the corner of Hartford Street and Mill Street. The property has been privately owned by the Perry family since 1908. The Perry family graciously offered WLT an option to purchase the development rights to the property. Through the generous donations of many Westwood residents, WLT purchased these development rights in July 2005, and the WLT holds a conservation restriction that permanently protects the 36 acres from any future development. The Perry property links up with Hale Reservation and contains important wildlife habitat including rocky outcroppings, vernal pools and forests. Please park on Twin Post Road and meet at the base of the driveway to 388 Hartford Street at 2 pm.

So mark your calendar for the cleanup on Sunday, May 2. All ages are welcome. Garbage bags will be supplied. Any questions, call Karen Manor Metzold at 617-697-5671. Learn more about Westwood’s Town Cleanup at www.keepourtownclean.com.

Last Year's Cleanup of the 795 Clapboardtree Street Property

The Westwood Land Trust would like to thank the twenty-plus volunteers that gave their time and energy to fill six large trash bags with litter. Special thanks go to Mike Burke and the Pack 1 Islington Cub Scouts and their families for their participation and enthusiasm. After the cleanup, Westwood Land Trust President Nancy Dempze led a hike through the 23-acre property.
